St John’s church is the oldest building in Clacton – built some 900 years ago. All through the ages it has been a place of worship for Christians – worshipping the same Jesus Christ then as now.
Sadly, in 1986, St John’s had to close due to structural problems. Since that time, a lot of money has been spent making the building safe. We were delighted to be able to reopen the building for worship on the last night of the 20th century, when 450 people came to worship God for a “Millennium Moment”.
In May 2000, St John’s reopened for regular Sunday worship. Since then, a great congregation has developed, with many “regulars” joining with visitors to worship God. The service, at 9.00am, lasts about an hour, and is a fairly traditional mix of hymns, songs, readings and a sermon. There is also an informal evening service at 6.30pm every Sunday.
St John’s is known as a friendly church – somewhere you can really feel part of a family. So why not come
along and join us?
“I rejoiced with those who said to me,
‘Let us go to the house of the LORD.’”
Psalm 122:1
Children and Young People
We are very keen to welcome every age to St John’s. So, we run a whole range of groups and clubs for children and young people. For more details, click here.
Time is a monthly multimedia event aimed at teens and young adults.
We use videos, slides, readings and music to help us to think and talk about God and faith.
There's also a
live band. We aim to make the event accessible for people with little church background. The feed back from those who have attended has been very positive.
